SALT LAKE CITY – Sept 19, 2017 – A free guide is now available to aid continuity planners in building leadership support for campus-wide action and inclusion, which Kuali found to be a main component in increasing the resiliency of colleges and universities.
Planning how to deal with and recover from disaster is critical for institutions of higher education, yet approximately 60% of US institutions are not adequately prepared. Full, campus-wide engagement, having every office and department involved in planning for their specific needs, is required. Yet research shows that without top-down leadership support, that institutional engagement rarely happens.
“Priorities are set by senior leaders,” said Matthew Hart, Emergency Management Specialist, Tufts University. “ And if [continuity planning] isn’t on their radar, then it won’t be on the radar of those who report to them.”
Hazards and events that cause emergencies vary widely, including natural dangers such as earthquakes, floods, and wildfires; biological hazards and infectious diseases; human-caused dangers such as shooters, chemical spills, cyber attacks, and many others. The actions taken before, during, and after such events must be planned in advance for optimal resilience.
Becky Higgins, the product manager of Kuali Ready, a continuity planning solution designed specifically for higher education, is hearing increasingly frustrated conversations about the challenge of obtaining leadership support on campus. “We are learning why leadership support is such a difficult challenge and want to help the higher ed community develop support from their leaders and improve the state of their plans,” stated Higgins.
