Cindy Mohat has. Mohat, Emergency Management Coordinator and Business Continuity Planner at the University of Texas Arlington, didn’t waste her time and got right to work. After reading through our guide, she made a few alterations to the way she approached her leaders for support. We asked a few questions about the changes she made at her institution.

Annie Deere: How did you hear about Kuali’s Leadership Guide?
Cindy Mohat: The guide was sent to me via email by Tony Benjamins.
Annie: What were your initial thoughts about the guide?
Cindy: I thought the guide was simple to read, full of pictures, and got right to the point.
Annie: How significant is leadership support for a BCP manager?
Cindy: For a BCP manager trying to implement plans, leadership support is critical. In fact, implementation probably won’t happen without leadership support. If a plan is developed for a department, it won’t be taken seriously without support from higher levels of a university.
Annie: How was the leadership guide helpful? Did it help you to think of additional things you could do to improve your BCP?
Cindy: The guide provided a clear and to-the-point explanation of what our Administrative Executive Group can do to assist in the process and progress of BCP development. It covered exactly what was important. I’ve tried lots of different things, so the guide didn’t prompt to me to think of something I haven’t tried at one point or another. I might revisit some methods though.
Annie: Did you use any of the suggested methods to get leadership support? If so, which ones?
Cindy: I sent the guide up the chain until it reached the president of the university, provost, and a few other vice presidents.
I had a letter from the president that I have used for the past 3 years, but it needed to be updated to include our new provost. I recommended a change in the letter by requesting that the deans to the colleges also sign the letter. My vice president recommended that two letters from the president be created:
- A letter addressed to the business functions of the university, signed by the president.
- A letter addressed to the academic and research functions, signed by president, provost and deans.
The vice president will take the suggestions to the president in the near future. I’m hoping for positive results!
Annie: Did you see any resistance from faculty?
Cindy: I have not seen any resistance from the faculty at this time.
Annie: Were your efforts to obtain leadership support successful? What kind of impact did you or do you hope to see?
Cindy: I had a letter crafted before seeing the guide that I have been using for the last 3 years. I wanted to go a little further in my efforts and changed the letter to include the deans. I have not heard the results from the recommendations at this time.
Annie: How has the guide helped you to reach your goals as a continuity manager?
Cindy: At a university, empirical research or findings are very important. The guide provided evidence based on what others are doing and what methods lead to success. As a tier 1 institution, we want to be the trailblazers and strive to be the best at what we do. The guide provided the ability to do so.
Cindy Mohat is the Emergency Management Coordinator and Business Continuity Planner at the University of Texas Arlington. Mohat has been involved with disaster planning at local, county, state and federal levels. For almost 10 years now, Mohat has worked in higher education emergency planning and business continuity planning at UT Arlington.
