Our Manifesto

Higher education has an ongoing technology problem. Students, faculty, and staff demand an experience that is faster, simpler, more open, and always improving.

In higher education, that experience—that freedom—sometimes feels light years away.

We believe higher education deserves better. You deserve better. You deserve to spend less on administration, and more on teaching, learning, and research.

You deserve beautifully designed software that’s simple to use and makes every job a whole lot easier.

You deserve the freedom to choose what you need to support your institution—every day, not once every 15 years.

You deserve to work with people who put customers, not shareholders, first.

Kuali is making it simpler for higher education to get to work. We’re designing open, cloud-based software that’s easy and fun to use. We’re developing simpler ways for you to manage what’s become overly complex. And we’re building a company with bright, enthusiastic employees whose single focus is to help you work the way you want to.

Our History

Kuali began in 2005 as a non-profit, open-source community initiative for developing higher education administrative systems that provided better long-term alternatives to what was available.

Founding members included Indiana University, University of Arizona, University of Hawaii, Michigan State University, San Joaquin Delta Community College, Cornell University, the National Council for College and University Business Officers (NACUBO), and rSmart.

In 2014, we created the Kuali company to focus efforts on accelerating software development, improving the Kuali user experience, and bringing Kuali Student, Financials, Research, and Ready to the cloud.

The Leadership Team

The Kuali leadership team possess more than 20 years of experience in education technology. CEO, Joel Dehlin, most recently served as CTO/CPO of Instructure. Chris Coppola, COO, was the founder and CEO of rSmart, a Kuali acquisition. Kuali has offices in Salt Lake City, UT and Scottsdale, AZ.

Our Values

We think we’re different from other education technology companies. That’s because we make some promises–to ourselves and to our customers.

Deliver amazing experiences

Every interaction is an opportunity to delight and transcend expectations. We prioritize the user experience and we design to add value. We each have the power to inspire.

Cultivate openness

Transparency guides all our actions. Our communications are inclusive and we benefit from the diverse feedback generated by our open practices. We use and develop open source products. We create and share open resources. We depend on the ideas, opinions and shared experiences of the greater community.

Assume the best

Trust is our default setting. We assume the best intentions of our customers and colleagues. We listen without judgment. We acknowledge opinions and feelings and respect diverse perspectives. We are positive and hopeful in our interactions.

Iterate to evolve

Continuous improvement is driven by innovation. We experiment to learn. We evolve through frequent iterations and incremental improvements.

Act with accountability

We are empowered to make decisions without asking permission. We cultivate a safe environment to admit mistakes and find solutions. We are accountable for our actions and do not shift blame or make excuses. We find humor in the midst of failure, but work seriously hard to make things right.

Practice humility

We seek continuous feedback and cherish the wisdom of others. We admit our mistakes and acknowledge when we are wrong. We give appreciation and express our sincere gratitude. We honor expertise and champion lifelong learning.
